FAQs

1

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only hair removal method recognized by the FDA as truly permanent. Unlike other treatments that only reduce or weaken hair growth, electrolysis is designed to fully eliminate the follicle’s ability to regenerate

2

How does Electrology work?

The process is precise and methodical, treating each hair individually:

  • Insertion: A professional electrologist slides a sterile, hair-thin probe into the natural opening of the hair follicle.
  • Energy Delivery: A small amount of electrical current or heat is sent through the probe to destroy the growth cells at the root.
  • Removal: Once the follicle is disabled, the hair is gently removed with tweezers and over time with commitment to individualized treatment plans the hair will not grow back

3

Is Electrology Permanent?

Yes, electrolysis is the only method recognized and approved by the FDA and the American Medical Association (AMA) for permanent hair removal. Unlike laser treatments, which are FDA-cleared only for “permanent hair reduction,” electrolysis completely over a series of treatments destroys the follicle’s regenerative cells thus creating permanent results.

4

Is Electrology Painful?

The sensation of electrolysis is often described as a quick pinch, zap, or itching, stinging feeling that lasts only a split second per hair. While everyone’s pain tolerance is different, most clients find the treatment highly manageable.

To minimize any discomfort, consider these preparation steps:

  • Stay Hydrated: Well-hydrated skin allows the current to flow more effectively, often making the treatment smoother and less painful.
  • Avoid Caffeine: Skipping coffee or tea on the day of your appointment can help keep your nervous system calm and reduce sensitivity.
  • Topical Numbing: Many clients use an over-the-counter numbing cream (like 3% lidocaine) applied 30–60 minutes before their session.
  • Timing: For some women, skin sensitivity increases during the menstrual cycle, so you may prefer to avoid booking sessions during that time.

What types of hair can Electrolgy treat?

Electrolysis is the only hair removal method that is truly universal. Because it targets the follicle individually rather than relying on color contrast, it is effective for every combination of hair color and skin color.

Electrolysis is safe and effective for:

  • All Skin Tones: From very fair (Type I) to the darkest complexions (Type VI) on the Fitzpatrick scale.
  • All Ages: It is a safe option for teens (with parental consent) through seniors.
  • Sensitive Areas: It can be used safely on the face, ears, breasts, and more delicate areas where other methods might be too harsh.
